Joining of Two Glasses with the Help of Air

Science Magic Tricks for School Student - Fun Science

Today man can't move a step forward without the help of science. So, science is one of the main subjects in school curriculum but students take it as a dry subject. In fact, our students are not getting science education in a proper way as there is lack of trained teachers, skillful teacher and lack of materials needed for practical.
How far it is relevant to teach science through rote learning, when the saying says practical knowledge is better than theoretical knowledge, one question is always in front of us. Therefore, it is our responsibility to prepare the students mentally for science study with useful skills.
In this Post, we find the use of things around our houses, which are thought useless, can be used for science practicals.
Below are the list of practical that are prepared for students. Some of our topic related to these are - Elementary Science Project, Science Project for Kids, Stem Fair ideas, Fun Science etc.

Necessary Materials - Joining of Two Glass with the Help of Air:

  • Two tumblers made of glass.
  • Two rubber bands or rings from the tube of bicycle.
  • A little kerosene oil.
  • A few pieces of paper.
  • Matches.
  • A little water.

Preparation - How to Join Two Glasses with the Help of Air?

The circumference of the rubber band should be equal to that of the opening of the tumbler so that it may be set on the opening accurately. So, choose the tumbler with the opening equal to the circumference of the rubber band.

How to present the GameJoining of Two Glasses with the Help of Air:

Firstly, drench the rubber with water and set it accurately on the opening of a tumbler.
Mind it, if the rubber is not set accurately on the opening of the tumbler, the game/project will be not successful. Then sprinkle a few drops of kerosene oil over the pieces of paper, and put them into the tumbler. Set fire to the piece of paper with the matches. Now, join the opening of the next tumbler smoothly to that of the previous one. The rubber should not move or fall in this position. Hence, after both tumbler get joined together, the fire inside the lower tumbler will be extinguished just after a little while.

Now, pronounce the magic spell and hold out the upper tumbler and lift it. What happened? Why did it happen so? Just try to realize it, then go through the following explanation.

The Scientific Reason - How Air Pressure can Join Two Glasses?

When the pieces of paper caught fire, the air present in the tumbler gets heated which raises upwards and comes out. Consequently the internal air-pressure lessens. As the external atmosphere pressure is more than the internal pressure the lower tumbler gets joined to the upper one and it doesn't fall.

Note: Just try to pull the tumblers straight up or downwards! Perhaps it is difficult even to separate them, isn't it?
