The Process of Boiling Water By Cold Water

Science Project - Science Magic Trick

Today man can't move a step forward without the help of science. So, science is one of the main subjects in school curriculum but students take it as a dry subject. In fact, our students are not getting science education in a proper way as there is lack of trained teachers, skillful teacher and lack of materials needed for practical.
How far it is relevant to teach science through rote learning, when the saying says practical knowledge is better than theoretical knowledge, one question is always in front of us. Therefore, it is our responsibility to prepare the students mentally for science study with useful skills.
In this Post, we find the use of things around our houses, which are thought useless, can be used for science practicals.
Below are the list of practical that are prepared for students. Some of our topic related to these are - Elementary Science Project, Science Project for Kids, Stem Fair ideas, Fun Science etc.

Necessary Materials - Boiling of Water by Cold Water:

  • A flask made of glass
  • A cork that can be set accurately in the opening of the flask.
  • Cold water or a piece of cloth drenched with cold water.

Presentation of the Project: - How to Boil water by Cold water?

Fill boiled water in the flask and cover its opening with the cork. After a short while, water will stop boiling.

Generally water boils only on fire and as soon as boiling water is removed of the fire, it stops boiling, but the water that has stopped boiling can be reboiled. Here a game of boiling water by an another method too has been presented.

Upset the flask filled with hot water. Pour some cold water into it or place a piece of cloth drenched with water over the upper part of the flask. After a few  moments, water inside the flask will start to boil again.

The Mystery - How can we boil water by cold water? - Generally water boils at 100C but it boils at lower than 100 in a place having a low atmosphere pressure and its boiling point is higher than 100 in a place having high atmospheric pressure. A liquid boils only when its vapour-pressure and the atmospheric pressure are equal to each other. In the standard temperature of pressure (Sea-level), water boils at 100C.

The Scientific Reason - How can we boil water by cold water?

In the above activity, cold water been applied over the outer surface of the flask. Because of the coolness of water, the vapour of hot water inside the flask gets cool and it changes into liquid. Consequently the atmospheric pressure inside the flask decreases and both the vapour-pressure and the atmospheric pressure become equal. That's why, water inside the flask begins to boil again.
